Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a holistic movement practice and lifestyle technique used to improve and enhance wellness of the body, mind, and spirit. Nia focuses on body awareness and sensation, seeking the sensations of joy and pleasure in the body, and learning how to work with our bodies to find those sensations when we are experiencing discomfort. Nia draws from 9 different movement techniques to create a comprehensive model. This movement model is comprised of Dance Arts (Modern, Duncan, and Jazz), Martial Arts (Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, and Aikido), and Healing Arts (Yoga, Feldenkrais, and Alexander Technique). Nia seeks to engage people in listening to their bodies, tapping into their creative centers, finding confident self-expression, and honoring each body's unique way of moving.

The practice of Nia helps to develop grace, coordination, flexibility, agility, mobility, stability and strength. Nia improves posture, circulation, and balance, strengthens the nervous system, increases energy, and reduces stress. Through the use of body awareness and exploration, Nia can also be a very helpful vehicle for relieving long term or chronic pain or discomfort held in the body (this is true both physically and emotionally!).

Practicing Nia is fun, stimulating, and energizing. It will take you on a transformational journey, helping you begin to integrate all aspects of self and healing- body, mind, and spirit, bringing you the opportunity to feel more alive and comfortable in your body than you ever have before!

Alyson offers two different ways to experience Nia: The classical fitness routines (cardio, strengthening, etc- choreographed routines), and the FreeDance classes. FreeDance is a movement exploration class, which takes you through a series of classes each one focusing on a different stage of Nia FreeDance. In these classes, we delve deeper into body awareness, sensation, self-expression, understanding how our bodies move, working with the emotional components of movement, and much more. FreeDance movement is very organic and authentic in nature. These classes can be transformative and will change your relationship with your body and movement. (FreeDance classes are offered for people of all ages- children and adults).

"Nia has been such an enrichment in my life! Alyson's teaching style promotes an unself concious delight in movement and is a workout for the mind, body and spirit. It seems to have a cumulative effect of promoting a sense of well-being. And my pants fit better!."
