Childbirth Education & Labor Support

Birth is more than the moment your baby is born or takes its first breath; it is a process. The process of birthing requires physical, mental, and emotional preparation. Alyson offers a natural approach to childbirth education where both mother and coach (father, husband, partner or friend) take an active role in learning how to move through labor with greater comfort and efficiency.

Alyson Young is a Natural Childbirth Educator and Doula, trained through the Academy of Husband-Coached Childbirth. She teaches a 6-8 week childbirth preparation course that includes information on nutrition, exercise, physiology, stages of labor, breastfeeding and more, but the key components are relaxation, learning how to work with your body, rather than against it, and understanding the process of labor in order to understand how best to support a woman who is moving through labor. Muscle tension increases pain and slows labor. Relaxation decreases pain and allows labor to be more efficient and the active participation of a well trained and trusted partner or coach, who has been educated along with her, helps a woman in labor to feel more at ease. It is essential that a woman feel safe, secure, and at ease in order to relax completely and for labor to continue progressing effectively.

Therefore, this class puts a great deal of emphasis on teaching ways to achieve physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. Alyson's education and skills as a healer have enhanced her ability to bring the best possible tools she can to her teaching and labor support. This has proven to be incredibly helpful for supporting mothers and couples throughout pregnancy, during labor, and post-partum. It is Alyson's hope to help other parents to learn about how to go through childbirth in a way that will have the same wonderful, positive, and profound impact on their lives, as it had on herself and her husband. She wants to help children get off to the best start possible in this world and feels that teaching these classes helps to accomplish that goal. Alyson believes that when children have a positive beginning, it increases their chances of living healthy, happy lives. Likewise, when parents make the choice to become educated and give their child the healthiest, safest, most natural beginning, then as a family they are more likely to continue to make healthy, conscientious, and intentional choices.

No matter what your current family dynamic, you and your baby make a family. The process of preparing to birth your baby and bring him/her into this world is a joyful and very rewarding experience, which increases family bonds and will enrich your lives in ways you will cherish forever. I look forward to helping you achieve the best possible birth experience for you and your baby and watching you celebrate your new family beginning!

"When we became pregnant with our first son we decided that we wanted to have a natural childbirth. We discovered that Alyson taught childbirth classes based on the Bradley Method, and after talking with her, we knew this was the route for us. After meeting Alyson and taking her childbirth class we got to know her well and I knew that I wanted, no, needed her to be at our birth as our doula. Spending those weeks learning about birth and discussing our hopes and dreams it was clear that Alyson was a grounded beautiful soul that would be an asset to our birth team. Alyson was everything I could have wanted in a doula. She was present without being in the way. She guided me only when I needed and allowed me to labor the way I needed. She was able to help remind Scott in a gentle un-intruisve way of techniques he could use to help me as I labored, allowing him to be the primary support person without stepping on his toes. We called her in the wee hours of the morning to let her know it was our day. She arrived at our house to be sure we were set and ready to go. When we assured her we were ok to head to the hospital without her she made her way to labor and delivery. I was elated when I got there and discovered that not only had Alyson gotten the one room with the birthing tub, but that the tub was full and ready for me to get in! Alyson was ever present and calm, quieting the room as necessary and being constant encouragement. I will never forgot hitting transition and feeling like there was no way I could do this. When I said I couldn't do it, Alyson looked me right in the eyes and told me without a doubt "you can do this." She gave me some bach flower essences that helped bring me to the place I needed to be. Zachary was born shortly after - completely intervention and drug fee. Alyson will always hold a special place in my heart!"
